There is a general consensus in the air that Obama is not popular. You don’t need to look at the polls to see this. So why is he unpopular? I believe it is because the average person has a short-term memory. People are truly worried about how they are going to pay their bills. Why are they worried about this? It is not the unemployment rate, even though the true unemployment numbers are probably closer to 20%. (The average the government talks about is those claiming benefits and forgets about those who cannot receive benefits or who have exhausted them). So then what are people worried about?
It’s completely Obama’s Fault. He has been in office for almost three years and he has not done anything. He spent all of the tax payers money bailing out corporations and banks. Mean while Americans are losing their jobs and homes. He is the most powerful person in the world and yet he cannot change the direction in which the country is headed. So yes, it is his fault.
It’s the economy that has people down. Even with the high unemployment numbers. The majority of America has a job. But that job doesn’t pay the bills anymore. It is inflation which has been on the rise for almost 100 years. I still have my grandmother who is almost 92 years old telling me about how much you could buy with a quarter. And what a nickel would buy. We all know the stories. I tell them to my niece and nephew. About the price of items in the 70’s. So how did we get here? How did we get to the point where people in record numbers are worrying not only about putting gas in their car, but clothes on their back and food on the table? Is this really the fault of one man in three years?
The current economy wasn’t created in the three years that President Obama has been in office. It was not created in the Bush years. It has been created because of the direction the country has been in for decades. Yet this direction I speak of is not really a direction. It is…more of…an attitude. I know some of you are saying…”WHAT!?!” But hear me out. It is not any of our faults. It kind of…just happened. There has been a shift in what we feel the country should do for us. Note, I did not say the government. Yes, it is true many of us look to the government for solutions when there are problems in America. But this is the root cause. Not the government; but our looking to it to solve our problems. Think about that for a second…Okay, maybe a minute…that’s right…we are to blame for the current situation. Not you and I individually. But, the USA as a whole. The prosperity this country has enjoyed since it’s beginning was due in part to the government. The government responded to the people. And what did the people want? To be FREE? So for the most part since the Revolutionary War we wanted our government to leave us alone. I will admit it has not been perfect. But I feel we have learned as a nation. We have evolved not as people…not as government…but, as a nation. When the nation felt something was wrong, we changed it. There have been many issues but, the obvious are: slavery, women’s rights, and segregation. These are not changed only by the individuals who are being oppressed. It takes the nation as a whole to say…ENOUGH! And guess what? The nation changed and moved away from its former policies and into the future. It was not any one individual or President. It required a movement, the movement of an entire nation. These changes normally exceed the 4-8 years of any individual president. If one of these monumental changes happen during a president’s term, it normally was started before he was in office. This is why I titled this article the way I did.
Believe me, I know you are saying…”So Jeff, tell me again. Why is this our fault?” Our government has grown is size tremendously in the past decades. Not because it wanted to; but because the nation wanted it to. The government merely responds to the people’s wishes. If the majority of people did not want the government to grow, it wouldn’t have. We as a nation would have spoken our mind with our votes. The government would have listened. The ones we voted in, if they did not do what they said they would, at the next election they would be voted out. It does not take long to change the government. However it can take a long time to change the people of a nation. I am not advocating the government kicking the people to the curb. The ones who have become reliant on the social programs this country offers. It is bigger than that. Way bigger. We need to start to think differently. I am sure many of you already have. What needs to take place is for us as a whole nation to start to think differently. For us to leave our former policies in the past and move forward into the new future. Together…not as Democrats, Republicans, and Independents; but, as Americans. Stop Blaming Obama, or any of our elected officials. It is time for, “We the people of the United States of America”. It is time for us to get a new attitude.
